[SIDE-ONLINE] INTERACTIVE: Sabah, Sarawak lead in protected products

PETALING JAYA: From Tenom coffee to Kek Lapis Sarawak, East Malaysia leads in having the most registered Geographical Indication (GI) products in the country, according to data from the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO).

MyIPO defines a GI as a name or sign that identifies a product as originating from a specific location, where its quality, characteristics or reputation are closely linked to that place.

Sabah and Sarawak each have 32 GI-registered items encompassing their rich food heritage, agricultural diversity, and traditional craft. 

In Sabah, Kota Belud leads with five district-level GIs, including Tenunan Iranun Kota Belud, Penjaram Kota Belud, and Liking Kota Belud.

Sabah also has seven state-level GIs, among them Sabah Seaweed, Sabah Batik, Kolupis Sabah and Bosou Sabah.

In Sarawak, the Sibuti district recorded the highest number of GI registrations with five products, including Belacan Sibuti, Buah Tarap Sibuti, and Daun Sabong Sibuti.

Beyond district-level products, Sarawak also has 19 statewide GIs, including household names such as Sarawak Pepper, Sarawak Beras Biris and Kek Lapis Sarawak.

Since 2003, MyIPO has received a total of 167 GI applications, including 147 local submissions and 20 from foreign producers seeking protection in Malaysia.

Of these, 110 local applications and 18 foreign applications were successfully registered.

Several of Malaysia's most recognisable agricultural icons are also GI-protected, including four durian varieties — Musang King, Black Thorn, Durian Balik Pulau (Penang), and Durian Nyekak Sarawak.

The country's famed Harumanis mango from Perlis also holds GI status.

Under the Geographical Indications Act 2022, registered proprietors hold exclusive rights to use the GI, authorise others to use it, and pursue legal action against misuse.

GI protection spans multiple categories, including wine and spirits, food and beverages, agricultural produce, handicrafts and textiles.

Registration is valid for 10 years from the filing date and can be renewed indefinitely in 10-year cycles.

INTERACTIVE: EV boom highlights charging bay shortage

Malaysia’s vehicle-to-charger ratio currently stands at 13 EVs per charger nationwide, an increase of 18% compared to 11 a year ago. As of June 30, figures from the Malaysia Electric Vehicle Charging Network (MEVnet) dashboard show that there were 4,161 public EV charging bays across 1,374 locations nationwide. This is a 61% increase from The Star’s previous analysis in July 2024 when 2,585 bays were installed. Despite the increasing number of charging stations being built, EV registrations have been rising at an even faster pace. INTERACTIVE: A once-in-33-year Raya phenomenon

In 2033, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Chinese New Year and Christmas will fall close to each other, creating a joyful overlap of celebrations. This phenomenon occurs because Hari Raya Aidilfitri will be celebrated twice in 2033 – first in early January and again in December. The first Aidilfitri of 2033 will coincidentally fall in the same month as Chinese New Year (Jan 31). The second Aidilfitri of that year will occur close to Christmas (Dec 25).
